Essential Aftercare for Coloured Hair

To help your hair colour stay rich and vibrant for longer — while keeping your hair healthy and glossy — it’s important to follow the right aftercare routine after colouring. Below are the key recommendations to help maintain your salon results for as long as possible.

Choose the right hair care

Use gentle shampoos and conditioners designed for coloured hair. They help retain pigment within the hair, prevent dryness and keep the cuticle smooth. Avoid harsh cleansing products and choose sulphate-free formulas.

Minimise heat exposure

Frequent use of hot tools and strong sun exposure can speed up colour fading. Never go to bed with wet hair and don’t keep your hair wrapped in a towel for longer than 5 minutes. When styling, always use a heat protectant, and when outdoors, protect your hair with hats or products containing UV filters.

Be cautious with chlorine

Chlorinated water can negatively affect both colour and the hair’s structure. Before swimming, thoroughly wet your hair with clean water and apply conditioner to create a protective barrier. Afterwards, rinse your hair well, wash with an anti-chlorine shampoo, and follow with a nourishing mask.

Additional tips for long-lasting colour

  • Wash your hair with cool or lukewarm water — this helps keep the cuticle closed.
  • Choose your shampoo according to your scalp type (dry, oily or normal).
  • When washing, apply shampoo to the scalp and avoid rubbing the lengths with shampoo.
  • Wait at least 48 hours after colouring before your first wash.
  • Regular toning between colour appointments can refresh the shade and improve hair condition.

Plan your stylist visits

A personalised schedule for maintenance and colour refresh is key to keeping hair looking beautiful and healthy. Your stylist will advise on the best timing between appointments based on your lifestyle and the condition of your hair.

Proper aftercare is simple, but it’s what keeps your colour long-lasting and your hair looking polished between salon visits.

I’m absolutely thrilled with the MODIFIX treatment — it’s just amazing!

My hair used to be dry and porous, but after the treatment it became denser, more elastic, and incredibly smooth. The frizz has disappeared, the ends look healthy, and the shine is unbelievable — I’ve never seen my hair look like this before.

It’s now an absolute must-have for me!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the AirTouch Original technique and classic highlights?
+
AirTouch and classic highlights deliver different results and are carried out differently. With classic highlights, sections are selected using a comb and lightened in foils to create brighter, more contrasting pieces, so a maintenance appointment is typically needed every 2–4 months depending on the natural hair colour. AirTouch is performed by blow-drying the section to remove shorter, new hairs; this creates a finer, more diffused lift with soft, natural transitions and no harsh regrowth line, making it a gentler option that grows out beautifully with less frequent upkeep.
What is Contouring in hair colouring?
+
Contouring is a technique that focuses on placing colour around the face, with tones tailored to the face shape, haircut and parting. Lighter and deeper shades are used strategically to create balance and enhance facial features.
Can Contouring be combined with other colouring techniques?
+
Yes. Contouring is often combined with techniques such as AirTouch, balayage or highlights to achieve a more personalised, harmonious result.
Are Highlights suitable for fine or weakened hair?
+
Highlights can be suitable for fine hair, but it’s always assessed on an individual basis. Hair condition is evaluated before the service, and a gentler approach or pre-treatment care may be recommended if needed.
What does the Total Blonde service involve, and who is it for?
+
Total Blonde is a full service that creates an all-over blonde from roots to ends. It’s ideal for those who want to be fully blonde and are prepared to commit to regular care and colour maintenance.
What should be considered before transitioning to Total Blonde?
+
It’s important to consider your starting colour, any previous colour history and the current condition of the hair. In some cases, moving to Total Blonde is best done in stages to protect hair quality. To maintain an even tone and keep the hair in good condition, root retouches are typically needed every 4–6 weeks.
How many sessions may be required to remove black pigment?
+
The number of sessions depends on the density and depth of the black pigment, as well as the hair’s condition. Most often, it’s carried out over several stages with recovery time between appointments.
Which hair types is MODIFIX Bio Straight suitable for?
+
MODIFIX Bio Straight is suitable for curly, wavy and frizzy hair when a smoother, more polished texture is desired without an overly aggressive process.
How long do the results of MODIFIX treatments last?
+
Results can last from 2 to 6 months, depending on hair type, home care and how well aftercare advice is followed.
Can Ampoule Treatment be combined with colouring on the same day?
+
Yes. Ampoule Treatment is often carried out on the same day as colouring. It helps support the hair, improve overall condition and reduce stress after chemical services.
